At maturity, this heartwood has a distinctive reddish brown color. This flooring has a light orange-brown coloration when it is installed. After a certain period of time, several months to several years, it will attain color maturity and a more red-brown tone. The sapwood will remain of a light colored cream or white over time. This is a softer hardwood, used for the commercial production of hardwood flooring.

Red Oak is a species which brings the classic hardwood look, perfect for older homes. Variable grain patterns with cathedral style peaks and linear grain are presented by the opposing open and closed graining of the hardwood. Red Oak’s heartwood is known well for it’s golden and reddish tones. The sapwood is normally composed of lighter colored boards or boards of a different hue.

Black Walnut is widely known for the coloration of its heartwood which can vary from a rich chocolate color to a light brown. Black Walnut’s heartwood contrasts its sapwood varying from a cream to white or ivory coloration. Walnut is a much softer wood, not typically used for hardwood flooring.

Hickory sapwood and heartwood combined creates the widest variety of colors of any of the species we carry. Hickory sapwood is a mostly off-white hue which can have pink or yellow undertones. With a dark or medium brown for the hickory heartwood. Each grain pattern can vary largely from one board to the next creating interesting looking floor patterns. Much more dense than Red Oak and Maple, hickory makes for a very durable floor for high traffic areas.
